Providing information on painting, with the environment in mind.

Doing Our Part

Environmental stewardship is a key operating principle at Valspar. We are mindful of how we operate our facilities; we work to protect employees, the public and the environment by minimizing emissions and waste and promoting recycling.

We are also committed to:

  • Making environmental improvements to our materials and processes.
  • Developing products that minimize environmental impact.

We have developed paints and coatings that use water-based formulas instead of solvents, with lower levels of volatile organic compounds (VOC's).

Clean Air Matters

Valspar's Consumer paints meet or exceed national, state and local ordinances for low VOC in consumer products.

Clean Water Matters

We saved over a million gallons of water usage in our latex plant operations through optimization and reuse programs.

Clean Land Matters

We buy new latex paint cans made from recycled plastic. The post-consumer waste in these cans varies from a minimum of thirty percent to plastic cans made entirely from post consumer waste.

Our paint cans ship in cardboard cartons made from 100% recycled materials.

Valspar's consumer paint plants each year

  • Recycle over 700,000 lbs of metal (lids, handles, pails, drums).
  • Reuse and/or recycle over 2 million pounds of plastic
  • Reuse 483,000 pounds of solvent to prevent waste
  • Reuse and/or recycle 440,000 pounds of paper, cardboard and wood.

In 2007, we recycled over 150,000 gallons of paint through a partner firm.

Reduce Consumption & Energy

Image of reduced energy consumption

In 2007, we began various energy conservation initiatives that resulted in a reduction of energy consumption. Some examples of these initatives include converting our plants, warehouses and offices to high efficiency fluorescent lighting, and retrofitting motors and starters to more energy efficient units.

Product Stewardship

Valspar is an active participant, along with the National Paint and Coatings Association, the Product Stewardship Institute (PSI) and a number of federal, state and local stakeholders, to reduce the generation and ensure the proper management of post consumer paint.

PSI, a non-profit organization, facilitates dialogue with diverse stakeholders including paint manufacturers, paint recyclers, paint contractors, retailers, environmental groups, state and local government agencies, and federal agencies. The focus of the dialogue is reducing the generation of leftover paint, while increasing reuse and recycling opportunities.
